Knowing what to do — and what not to do — during a seizure can make all the difference for your loved one's safety and comfort.

During a Seizure — Do

Stay calm
Stay nearby
Observe and time the seizure duration
Move dangerous objects away
Check that breathing resumes normally afterward

During a Seizure — Don't

Do not restrain the person
Do not place anything in the mouth
Do not attempt to stop the seizure

Recording details about the event may be helpful for future discussions with the neurologist.

When Should Emergency Help Be Called?

Seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
Multiple seizures occur without recovery in between
Breathing does not return to normal
Injury occurs during the seizure
The seizure occurs in water
